Mackenzie was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on April 1, 1987. From a young age, she showed a keen interest in acting, but only mildly pursued it throughout her school years. Her parents wanted her to have a solid alternative to acting, so she studied English literature and women’s studies at McGill University in Montreal. After graduating, she couldn’t shake the desire to act, so she took off to New York City and studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre.

Despite worries about being jobless after graduating from drama school, Mackenzie quickly landed the role of Lauren Reynolds in Drake Doremus’ 2013 film Breathe In. From there, she saw steady success in the film industry with movies such as What If, That Awkward Moment, Always Shine, and most notably as Mindy Park in The Martian. She starred as the lead role in Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town, which also marked her first time as a producer. Mackenzie’s true rise to fame came in television with AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire, in which she plays computer coder prodigy Cameron Howe starring opposite Lee Pace, Scoot McNairy, and Kerry Bishé. The show was renewed for a fourth and final season airing in summer 2017. In 2016, Mackenzie appeared in the Emmy Award-winning Black Mirror episode “San Junipero” opposite Gugu Mbatha-Raw, which catapulted her to an unexpected level of fame. Mackenzie’s upcoming roles include the title role in Tully opposite Charlize Theron, and Mariette in the much-anticipated Blade Runner 2049.

In her spare time, Mackenzie loves traveling and reading, but her biggest hobby is collecting taxidermy animals and preserving insects. She’s gone on shows, such as Conan, and described her love of finding roadkill and her favorite ‘pet’ lizard whom she’s named Nicholas Cage due to his long face.
